Indian Roller

Description
Look at this absolutely gorgeous bird! It has a pinkish face and throat, a brown head and back, with blue on its rump and contrasting light and dark blue on its wings and tail. The bird is also called Neelkanth in many local languages (supposedly associated with Lord Shiva — definitely a folk tale I need to research!) There are many regional beliefs and Hindu legends associated with this bird. I've even been thinking about using some of them as writing prompts to inspire new stories. Anyway, do appreciate this absolutely beautiful bird that I've had the pleasure of seeing often in the jungles and on the highways of Central India. This was the first time one sat so patiently and close to our jeep, allowing me to photograph it from multiple angles. Photographed at Tadoba Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, India
